Smart glasses
Meta glasses: AI, augmented reality or virtual reality? Here is where things stand

When you search for “Meta glasses”, you come across terms that get mixed up: AI glasses, AR glasses, VR glasses… Meta actually offers three very different types of product. Here is how to tell them apart.
1. Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta: AI glasses, without a display
These are the best-selling Meta glasses. They include a camera, microphones, open-ear speakers and the Meta AI assistant, but no display. You interact by voice or by pressing the temple, and the answers arrive in your ears.
- Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2: the all-rounder, in Wayfarer, Skyler, Headliner and other styles, with 3K video and up to 8 hours of battery life. Details in Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2: what really changes.
- Oakley Meta HSTN: the lifestyle and light-sport version, with Prizm™ or Transitions® lenses.
- Oakley Meta Vanguard: the sports model, designed for cycling and running, compatible with Garmin and Strava.
So they are neither augmented reality glasses nor virtual reality glasses: they are AI smart glasses. They are available in our Smart glasses collection.
2. Meta Ray-Ban Display: a first step towards AR
Unveiled in September 2025, Meta Ray-Ban Display adds a small colour display in the right lens. It shows messages, directions, translations or Meta AI answers, and also acts as a viewfinder for the camera. It is controlled with the Meta Neural Band, a wristband that picks up small hand movements.
This is not yet augmented reality in the strict sense: the display shows information in your field of view, without anchoring 3D objects in the room. After an initial postponement in Europe, Meta is launching them on 13 October 2026 in France, Germany and Italy, wristband included, at the premium end. Switzerland is not part of this first wave.
3. Orion: true AR glasses… not yet for sale
Orion is Meta's augmented reality glasses prototype, with a field of view of around 70°. It has been shown to the public, but it is not on sale. If you see “Meta AR glasses” for sale, they are in fact the models above.
4. Meta Quest: virtual reality, not glasses
“Meta VR glasses” generally refers to Meta Quest headsets. They cover your eyes completely to immerse you in a virtual world or blend real and virtual. Very good for gaming and exercise at home, they are not worn in the street like glasses.
In short
- You want glasses to wear every day that film, play music and answer your questions: Ray-Ban Meta or Oakley Meta.
- You want to see information in the lens: Meta Ray-Ban Display, if it is available in your country.
- You want total immersion: a Meta Quest headset, not glasses.
