Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2: double the battery life, 3K video… what really changes

Twice the battery life, longer and sharper videos: Gen 2 fixes the shortcomings of the first Ray-Ban Meta. A look at what's new.

The first Ray-Ban Meta popularised smart glasses, but its limited battery life was a talking point. The second generation, available notably as Skyler, Headliner and Wayfarer, tackles precisely that weakness. Here is what changes.

1. Up to twice the battery life

Meta quotes up to 8 hours of typical use, compared with around 4 hours for the first generation. The charging case adds up to 48 hours, and a 20-minute fast charge brings the battery back to 50%. Press reviews confirm a genuine day of mixed use (music, calls, photos, short videos).

2. Longer videos, in 3K

Gen 2 films in 3K Ultra HD, with a 12-megapixel sensor. Above all, clips can now last up to 3 minutes, compared with 30 seconds before: enough to capture a real moment, not just an instant.

3. Extra software features

Meta has announced hyperlapse and slow-motion modes, as well as a feature that brings out the voice of the person you are talking to in a noisy environment. Live translation supports several European languages, including French, German, Italian and Spanish.

4. The same styles, new colours

There is no technical difference between the Skyler, the Headliner and the Wayfarer: only the style changes. The Skyler, with its retro “cat-eye” shape, is for those who want a more fashion-led frame. Meta has also launched limited-edition colours, such as a mystic violet Skyler.

Should you move to Gen 2?

If the battery life of your first pair frustrates you, yes: it is the most noticeable improvement. If you are new to smart glasses, Gen 2 is now the best-balanced entry point in the Ray-Ban Meta range.
